Carbon Credits

Carbon offsets are becoming an increasingly popular way for individuals and businesses to participate in solutions to CO₂ usage. The basic idea of a carbon offset is to figure out your personal contribution level to the global warming problem from such activities as driving, flying, or home energy use. This contribution is called a "carbon footprint." This term is named after carbon dioxide, the principal greenhouse gas. You can aim to balance out your carbon footprint by purchasing carbon offsets. The offset purchase with RAC funds reductions in greenhouse gas emissions through projects in reforestation. As more clean energy is produced, this displaces energy being created from fossil fuels. By funding these reductions in greenhouse gas emissions, you balance out, or offset, your own impact by an equivalent amount. Carbon offsets help you to take personal responsibility for the environmental consequences of your activities.

The DOE estimates that for every gallon of jet fuel burned, 21.095 pounds of CO2 are emitted.

Verifiable Emission Reductions—VERs

In voluntary carbon markets, activities that reduce GHGs produce Verified Emission Reductions (VERs) that can be sold to companies or individuals wishing to voluntarily reduce their carbon footprints.

For projects to be able to generate emission reductions, particular processes and procedures must be followed. These stages include a due diligence emission assessment to determine the feasibility of the project, a Project Design Document (PDD), a formal outline of the project and expected emission reductions, validation/ verification of this document by an independent body and where applicable the project's credits are issued by a registry.

 

RAC plans to support and oversee all aspects of project operations, working with project developers throughout the various stages, including initial assessment, full project documentation development, emission reduction stream quantification, and assistance with monitoring and verification of GHG reductions.

 

VER Standards

 

In order to ensure that buyers of VERs are purchasing a real emission reduction, VERs must be developed and calculated according to a VER Standard. There are several VER standards currently being used throughout the world, and each sets out different rules governing the project types that are acceptable and the measurements of emission reductions.

Carbon Credit Offsets

RAC will plant new trees as a site is cleared of dead tree matter.  Each new tree planted will remove and store carbon during its lifetime.  This activity when verified generates a Carbon Credit Offset which may be purchased by businesses or individuals voluntarily in some countries and by mandate in others.
